Owl baseball Team Sweeps Eastern CT

 

Mansfield, CT 4/20/02 - Keene State College built big early leads in both games and held on to post a 5-4, 10-7 Little East Conference baseball sweep of Eastern CT State Univer. Saturday at ECSU Baseball Stadium.





The wins were the first for Keene State (17-13, 6-3 LEC) over Eastern Conn (23-7, 8-2 LEC) after nine losses in conference play.  Eastern Conn came into the twinbill ranked fifth nationally and first in New England.





The Owls surged to a 5-0 lead in the first game.  In the nightcap, KSC scored six runs on five hits in the first inning. 





Junior Ben Tyer (Lee, MA.) saved both games for KSC. He got a strikout and a fly ball in the seventh inning of the first game after the Warriors had pulled to within one (5-4). Following a double in the second game, Tyer got out of the jam when first baseman Eric Kilburn (Keene, NH) snared a line drive.  





Keene State had 22 hits in the doubleheader and two home runs in each game.  In the first game, Justin Hickman (Mont Vernon, NH) was 3-for-5 with a double and a RBI while John Trubiano (Keene, NH) drove in two runs with a pair of sacrifice flies.  In the second game Kilburn, Trubianoand marc Duncan (Concord, NH) each had two hits.  Trubiano drove in two runs with a first inning double and ninth inning RBI single and also scored three times.  Kilburn had a two run home run in the first inning.





Freshman James Slack (Manchester, NH) (4-1) pitched into the seventh inning to record his fourth win of the season.He allowed seven hits while fanning five and walking four. Buzzy Francis (Bedford, NH) gave up nine hits while striking out two and walking three before giving way to Tyer with two outs in the eighth inning of the second game.
