PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Keene State College
scored nine runs in the fifth inning Wednesday and went on to post
a 16-5 victory over Plymouth State College in a Little East
Conference baseball game at Panther Park.
The win gives KSC a season sweep over the Panthers, and improves
the Owls to 18-13 overall and 7-3 in the LEC. Plymouth State,
which had won five of its previous six, drops to 13-15-1 overall
and 2-7-1 in conference play. Junior Ben Tyer (Lee, MA.) led
the Owls with four hits, including a double and a home run, and six
runs batted in.
Keene State took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and
third innings, as junior Justin Hickman (Mont Vernon, N.H.) lead
off the second frame with a solohome run, his fourth of the season,
and freshman Matt Orszulak (Campton, N.H.) scored on a sacrifice
fly by Tyer in the third. PSC tied it up in the last of the
fourth when junior Matt Salokangas (New Ipswich, N.H.) provided an
RBI single and classmate Matt Price (Epping, N.H.) scored on a wild
pick-off attempt.
The Owls took an insurmountable lead in the fifth, plating nine
runs off three different Panther pitchers. Junior Eric
Kilburn (Keene, N.H.) had the big hit of the inning with his third
home run of the season, a two-run shot. Tyer contributed
three RBI in the inning with a run-scoring double and a two-run
single, and classmate John Trubiano (Keene, N.H.) added an RBI base
hit.
Tyer hit Keene State's third home run of the game in the seventh
inning, a solo shot for his second of the year. KSC finished
off the scoring in the ninth inning with four runs, two coming home
on a double by senior Kelly Charbono (Enfield, N.H.). Tyer
added his fourth hit with an RBI single, and Trubiano chipped in
with a sac-fly.
Trailing 12-2, PSC scored three runs in the eighth inning.
Juniors Jay Zinis (Manchester, N.H./Trinity), Robbie Burr (Concord,
N.H.) and Price led off with consecutive singles. Freshman
Derek Guimond (Lewiston, ME) plated one run with an RBI single, and
junior Sy Tebbetts (Hollis, N.H.) and freshman Matt Gabellieri
(Lincoln, R.I.) drove home the other two with sacrifice flies.
PSC sophomore Josh Forest (Manchester, N.H./Trinity) pitched well
for four innings, but didn't get out of the fifth and took the loss
(2-4). Senior Andrew Cuthbertson (Lafargeville, N.Y.) worked
the first seven innings for Keene State to pick up the win,
improving his record to 3-2.
The Panthers host Endicott in a non-conference game on Friday (3:30
p.m.) before entertaining Western Connecticut for an LEC twinbill
on Saturday (12 noon). Keene State plays Thursday at Westfield
State (3:30 p.m.) before returning home to host UMA Dartmouth
in a doubleheader Saturday (12 noon).
