Owl Baseball Team Blanks Fitchburg State 9-0

FITCHBURG, MA. 4/2/02 - Struggling at the plate since the start of the season, the Keene State College baseball team banged out 14 hits on the way to posting a 9-0 shutout victory over Fitchburg State College in a non-conference game played on Tuesday.

Starter Ben Tyer (Lee, MA.) (1-1) pitched seven strong innings for KSC to pick up his first win of the season.  The junior hurler scattered five hits while striking out six and walking five.  Nick Wirkkala (Lempster, NH) and James Slack (Manchester, NH) both pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

The Owls scored their runs in threes, scoring three runs in the fifth, sixth and ninth innings.  Doug Morse (Newport, NH) cracked his first career home run and Nick Bujeaud (Lincoln, NH) and Tyer had RBI hits in the fifth.

Three hits and two Falcon errors gave KSC a 6-0 lead and Josh Coughlin (Keene, NH) added a RBI single in a three-run ninth inning.

Justin Hickman (Mont Vernon, NH) and Morse finished the game with three hits each.

"Everything came together, that's what I've been looking for all spring," said KSC Coach Ken Howe.  "We were swinging the bats and making the plays in the field.  Hopefully we can keep it going."

It was just the second win in the last 10 games for Keene State (6-8).  Fitchburg State drops to 3-12.

Keene State will host Springfield College in its home opener on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.) at Owl Stadium Complex.
