Baseball Owls Split With Castleton State

KEENE, N.H. 4/7/02 - The Keene State College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Castleton State College at Owl Stadium complex on Sunday.  The Spartans took the opener 6-5 and the Owls came back to win the nightcap 3-0 behind a solid seven inning, two-hit pitching performance by Nick Wirkkala (Lempster, NH).

Keene State goes to 11-9 while Castleton State is 11-5.

A grand slam home run by Mike Howe put Castleton up 4-2 after three innings in the opener. KSC tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning a RBI single by Nick Bujeaud (Lincoln, NH).

After the Spartans went ahead 6-4 in the fifth, KSC got one run back in the sixth on a RBI single from John Trubiano (Keene, NH).  The Owls threatened in the bottom of the seventh but could not get the equalizer.

Brian St. George (0-1) in relief of starter Michael Corsano took the loss for Keene State.

Justin Hickman (Mont Vernon, NH) and Trubiano both went three-for-four at the plate.

Wirkkala (1-1) struck out three and walked two to pick up his first win of the season in the second game.  The senior southpaw was pleased with his effort.  "I had some control problem in the first few innings, but then I was able to get into a rhythm hitting my spots and changing speeds.  The middle infielders did a great job behind me."

John Maryankski (Nashua, NH) run producing single gave KSC a 1-0 lead in the second.  Kelly Charbono (Enfield, NH) delivered two key insurance runs with a double in the sixth inning.

Keene State will host rival Plymouth State on Tuesday (3 p.m.).
