Baseball Owls Season Ends With 10-7 Loss To So. Me

MANSFIELD, CT  –  Senior DH Ryan Adams (Sanford, ME) slammed a three-run homer to highlight a seven-run second inning as the second-seededUniversity of Southern ME Huskies hung on to defeat the fourth-seeded Keene State Owls 10-7 Friday night and advance to the championship round of the Sixth Annual Little East Conference Baseball Championship Tournament being played at the ECSU Baseball Stadium in Mansfield, CT





USM has to beat third-seeded Western Connecticut State University (19-19),  the tournamentís only unbeaten team, twice on Saturday to capture the title and the automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament that goes with it. Western Connecticut advanced to the championship round by beating Keene State 7-6 in the winners bracket game of the four-team, double-elimination tourney Friday afternoon.  Southern ME beat top-seeded Eastern Connecticut in the losers bracket game to eliminated EC, the defending champion.





            Southern ME is making its fifth trip to the championship round in the six-year history of the tournament.  The Huskies are attempting to become the first team in the history of the tournament to lose their opening round game, then come back to win the title.  This is Western Connecticutís first trip to the championship round.





The Huskies jumped on Keene State senior starter and losing pitcher Andy

Cuthbertson (Lafargeville, N.Y.) in the second inning for five hits and a walk to score six times, the final three on Adamsí first career home run.  USM added the seventh run of the inning against junior reliever Corey Hartson (Merrimack, N.H.).





 Keene State chipped away at the lead with single runs in the second and

third, then scored three times in the fourth to pull within two (7-5) and chase USM sophomore starter Jason Thibodeau (Old Town, ME) from the game.  Junior DH Justin Hickman (Mont Vernon, N.H.), who went 3 for 4 in the game, scored the Owls run in the second and had an RBI single in the fourth.





USM added a single run in the fifth when senior C Peter LíItalien (Salem, MA.) scored from third while sophomore OF Adam Lemieux (Cumberland, ME) was caught in a rundown between first and second during a double steal attempt.

 The Owls closed to within one (8-7) with a pair of runs in the sixth on RBI singles by junior 2B Ben Tyer (Lee, MA.) and junior John Trubiano (Keene, N.H.).





Sophomore OF Colin Loveless (South Paris, ME) and junior OF Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) added a couple of insurance runs for the Huskies in the eighth inning with RBI singles.





Junior RHP Erik Carlson (Portland, ME), the third USM pitcher, pickedup his third win of the season hurling three innings of one-hit, shutout relief. Carlson worked out of a two-out, bases-loaded jam in the ninth inning. Delorme and junior 2B Andy Lang (New Bedford, MA.) paced the Huskies 14-hit attack with three hits apiece while Loveless and LíItalien had a pair of

hits.
