'KEENE, N.H. 9/14/02 - The Keene State College men's soccer team
erupted for three second half goals to upset sixth ranked Wheaton
College 3-2 in a non-conference game played Saturday in Keene.
Trailing 1-0 after a first half goal by Wheaton's Dan Antoniuk,
the Owls scored three goals in the final 12 minutes of the
game. The first two KSC goals came on perfectly executed
corner kicks. Chris Barker's (Pembroke, N.H.) first collegiate goal
tied the game at 1-1 and Casey Banks (Westborough, MA.) followed
with his fourth of the season that put the Owls ahead 2-1.
Jason Simone (North Salem, N.Y.) assisted on both goals.
"We just put in the corner kick play this week and we were right
on the button with it," said KSC coach Ron Butcher.
John Harke (Northampton, MA.) got what proved to be a key
insurance goal with just two minutes to play when his shot from the
left wing found the far corner of the net. After the
face-off, Jason Percy scored for Wheaton in the closing seconds to
account for the final score.
D.J. Nordmark (South Windsor, CT), who had an outstanding game
in goal for KSC, finished with 11 saves. Many of his stops in the
second half enabled KSC to stay in the game. Craig Varrell
had 14 saves for Wheaton (3-2).
Winners of two straight, Keene State (3-2) hosts Salem State on
Tuesday.
