'KEENE, N.H. 10/11/03 - Sal Friello's (West Haven, Conn.) goal
with 26 seconds to play in the first overtime lifted Plymouth State
University to a 3-2 Little East Conference victory over host Keene
State College at Owl Athletic Complex on Saturday.
PSU's Chipe Culum took a shot from the left side that was
knocked away by Owl goalie Brandon Beck (Johnstown, N.Y.), but
Friello knocked in the rebound for the game-winner.
Plymouth State, which entered the game with six straight shutout
victories, improves to 10-1 (4-0 LEC) while KSC falls to
7-5-1 (1-1-1LEC).
Joey Amaio (Wethersfield, Conn.) snapped PSU's shutout streak at
the 11:15 mark of the first half. Taking a through ball from
Justin Hickman (Mont Vernon, N.H.), Amaio broke in down the middle
and beat Panther goalie Brad Wilby (Haddonfield, N.J.) to the far
right corner.
PSU tied the score when Sabastian Rodriguez (San Jose,
Costa Rica) jumped on a loose ball in the crease and fired it into
the corner of the net. The Panthers took a 2-1 lead with 4:29
to play in the half. Following a long clearing punt by Wilby,
Culum corralled the ball and went in and beat Beck.
Keene State tied the game 13 minutes into the second half off a
direct kick play with John Harke (Leeds, Mass.) heading in a
crossing ball from Casey Banks (Westborough, Mass.). The Owls
had an opportunity to take the lead a minute later, but Banks' shot
on a free kick hit off the far post.
The Owls had a chance to win it 1:25 into the first overtime,
but Eric Scott's (West Springfield, Mass.) deflection sailed just
over the cross bar. Friello didn't miss his opportunity in the
closing seconds of the game. It was his fourth goal of the
season.
Wilby and Beck each finished the game with six saves. KSC
had won the previous four game in the rivalry.
KSC is at RPI on Tuesday. PSU is off until next Saturday at
Southern Maine.
