Parkinson Leads Owls Over USM 5-0

'GORHAM, Maine - Senior midfielder Katie Parkinson (South Kingstown, R.I.) netted a pair of goals and freshman midfielder Tara Wagner (Avon, Conn.) and Courtney Gately (Canton, Mass.) added a pair of assists to lift the Keene State College Owls to a 5-0 triumph over the host University of Southern Maine Huskies in Little East Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field.

 

Keene State improved to 7-3-1 and remains unbeaten in the conference at 2-0-1, while Southern Maine slipped to 4-5-1 overall and 0-3-0 in the league. Keene State travels to Worcester State on Monday, while Southern Maine visits Bowdoin College on Tuesday.

 

The Owls took an early 1-0 lead when Parkinson headed a corner kick from Wagner in the ninth minute of play.

<br>Southern Maine had its best chance to equalize in the 17th minute, but Keene State junior keeper Michelle Mason (Fairport, N.Y.) deflected a short chip from sophomore Eva Hanson (Warner, N.H.), and the ball smacked off the crossbar.

 

Keene State netted a pair of goals in a span of 4:37 early in the second half to grab a commanding 3-0 advantage. Parkinson scored on a rebound of a shot by junior Kerri Paquette (Millbury, Mass) at 47:50, before Lester converted a feed from freshmen Lindsey Murphy (Merrimack, N.H.) and  Gately (Canton, Mass.) at 52:27.

 

Jennifer Ortisi (Allenstown, N.H.) added her sixth goal of the season at 64:59 with an assist going to Wagner. Freshman Katie Stevens (Londonderry, N.H.) closed out the scoring in the 68th minute, when she ran down a long forwarding pass from freshman Gately and tucked the ball into the far corner.

 

The Owls held a decided edge in play, outshooting the Huskies by a 30-4 margin, and owning a 19-0 advantage in corner kicks.

 

Mason made three saves through 81 minutes of play, before yielding to sophomore Sarah Campbell (Auburn, Mass.) who did not face a shot. Southern Maine junior keeper Marcy Ansley (Hudson, Mass.) turned aside 16 shots, including a number of diving saves.
