'ROCHESTER, N.Y. 8/30/03 - Mike Lawson's goal at the 65:09 mark
of the second half lifted Rochester Institute of Technology to a
1-0 men's soccer victory over Keene State College in the champion
game of Tiger Invitational Tournament played Saturday in Rochester,
N.Y.
The winning goal came after an errant pass at midfield. RIT came
down the field on a 3-on-1 break and Trae Lawler passed over to
Lawson who put the ball into the open net.
KSC (1-1), which outshot RIT 9-4, had numerous opportunities to
score, but could not cash in. John Cortese (Wilbraham, Mass.)
was sent in just 15 seconds later, but his shot was directly at RIT
goalie Nate Anderson, who made the save.
With time running out in the game, the Owls had one more
opportunity to send the game into overtime, but Francisco
Vasconcelos' header sailed over the net.
"They came out and took it to us the first 20 minutes, but we
dominated the rest of the game " said KSC Coach Butcher. "We had
numerous chances to score, but we couldn't finish and we were beat
by a hot goalie."
Anderson made several outstanding stops among his nine saves.
Brandon Beck (Johnstown, N.Y.) finished with three saves for the
Owls.
Five KSC Owls were named to the All-Tournament team:
goalie Beck, back Jim Hogan, midfielder John Harke and forwards
Casey Banks and Jason Lombardo.
"I learned a lot about this team, added Butcher, who said he
will make some changes for next weekend's Diadora Soccer Showdown
at KSC.
