'DANBURY, CONN. 9/28/03 - Jennifer Ortisi's (Allenstown, N.H.)
goal with 2:38 to play in regulation enabled the Keene State
College to tie Western Connecticut State University 1-1 in a Little
East Conference women's soccer game played Sunday in Danbury, Conn.
The game, played under heavy rain, was a rematch on last year's
LEC Championship game won by KSC.
Despite dominating play, KSC found itself trailing 1-0 after
Nichole Corbin gave the Colonials a late first half goal.
Needing to energize her offense, KSC Coach Denise Lyons moved
sweeper beth Vachon (Amherst, N.H.) up to forward late in the
game. The moved paid off when the junior took a shot that hit
off a defender and Ortisi knocked the ball into the net. It
was Ortisi's fourth goal of the season.
"We had our chances, but we just couldn't put the ball in the
net," said Lyons, whose team had a 29-6 shot advantage.
"Fortunately we were able to fight back and get the tie."
The two teams played two scoreless overtime periods.
Michelle Mason (Fairport, N.Y.) had three saves for KSC (5-3-1,
1-0-1 LEC) while Kristen Bartholomew finished with 16 saves for the
Colonials (6-3-1, 1-0-1 LEC).
