'KEENE, N.H. 9/7/03 - Joey Amaio's (Wethersfield, Conn.) goal at
the 8:19 mark of overtime lifted Keene State College to a dramatic
come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Rowan University at the
Diadora-Dunkin' Donuts Soccer Showdown at Owl Athletic Complex on
Sunday.
Amaio, the tournament MVP, took a centering pass from Eric Scott
(West Springfield, Mass.) and blasted into the right top corner for
the game-winner.
Rowan took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Rich Dominiak (Mt.Laurel,
N.J.) on a corner kick by Oscar Hernandez (Woodstown, N.J.) at the
69:12 mark of the second half.
Less than a minute after the goal, KSC had a chance to tie the
score when Jason Lombardo (Woburn, Mass.) was pulled down in the
box. Lombardo's penalty kick to the far right corner was
saved by goalie Tom Eichom (Dumont, N.J.).
Following a key defensive play by Mike Lewis (Manchester, Conn.)
who knocked away a open net attempt by David Halliwell, KSC got the
equalizer. Luke Trill (Northfield, Mass.) sent Lombardo down
the left side and the junior striker put the ball into the top far
corner to knot the game.
John Harke (Leeds, Mass.) almost gave KSC the win two minutes
into overtime but his shot was just wide of the post. Amaio
would not be denied. His second goal of the season gave the Owls
the big early-season win.
Brandon Beck made seven saves for KSC (2-2) while Tom Eichhorn
stopped three shots for Rowan (2-2).
