KEENE, N.H. 10/13/04 - Casey Banks, (Westborough, Mass.) LEC
Offensive Player of the Week, and John Harke (Leeds, Mass.) each
had a goal and an assist to lead Keene State College to a 5-1
victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in a non-conference
men's soccer game played Wednesday night at Owl Athletic Complex.
Joey Amaio (Wethersfield, Conn.) opened the scoring with his
third goal of the season. The senior midfielder broke down the left
side and buried a shot into the far corner of the net. Banks
extended the lead to 2-0 seven minutes later, when he headed in a
long crossing pass from Harke for his team leading ninth goal of
the season.
Both goalies stopped breakaway attempts later in the half. KSC's
Brandon Beck (Johnstown, N.Y.) knocked away Sal Mangano's
(Syracuse, N.Y.) attempt and Red Hawk goalie Nick Bochette
(Schaghticoke, N.Y.) stopped Bank's shot. With Beck out of the net,
KSC defender Mike Lewis (Manchester, Conn.) preserved KSC's two
goal lead when he headed away Ed Sellitto's shot with 34 seconds to
play.
The two teams traded goals early in the second half. Nick Ruggio
(Oswego, N.Y) put RPI on the board with his fourth goal of the
season on a rebound following a corner. Jason Lombardo (Woburn,
Mass.) answered two minutes later when he netted a touch pass from
Banks for his seventh goal.
KSC added two more goals with LEC rookie of the week Greg Sauer
(Brookfield, Mass.) and Harke finding the back of the net.
Beck (six saves) and Matt Caron (Amston, Conn./ 1 save) saw
action in goal for KSC while Brochette (four saves) and Greg Goehle
(Selden, N.Y/one save) played in the net for the Red Hawks (6-4-3).
KSC (10-2-1) hosts Eastern Conn. on Saturday (1 p.m.).
