KEENE, N.H. - Keene State College battled the University of
Southern Maine to a 1-1 tie in a Little East Conference women's
soccer game played before a homecoming crowd at Owl Athletic
Complex on Saturday.
The Owls didn't waste any time getting on the board. Breanne
Lucy (Keene, N.H.) gave KSC a 1-0 lead at the 6:05 mark when she
raced down the right side and fired home her team-leading seventh
goal of the season.
The Huskies got the equalizer at the 65:20 mark of the second
half. Breaking away from the KSC defense, Liz Brunton (Birch
Harbor, Me.) broke in alone and beat Owl goalie Michelle Mason
(Fairport, N.Y.) for her fifth goal of the season.
Both teams had chances to go ahead in the second half. KSC's
Katie Stevens (Londonderry, N.H.) shot hit off the cross bar and
Mason made a sliding save on an attempt by Brunton.
Lucey had the best chance to score in the first overtime, but
her shot was stopped on a diving save by Marcy Ansley (Hudson,
Mass.). With 1:25 to go, Steven's header just sailed by the far
post. Mason finished with eight saves while Ansley stopped four
shots for USM (4-3-3, 1-1-1 LEC). KSC (5-3-1) had won the previous
seven games between the two teams.
KSC hosts Worcester State on Wednesday night (7 p.m.).
