Baseball: Owls Drop Two at Western Conn.

'Western Connecticut State University's baseball team swept a double header from the Keene State Owls Monday night at the Westside Field. The Colonials took the opener, 5-2, and the nightcap, 7-2.

 

Junior outfielder Josh Coleman (Terryville, CT) of Western homered in both games. Coleman now has six home runs in the 2004 campaign. Coleman finished game one 3 of 3 with two RBI. In the nightcap Coleman went 1-2 with a three home run.

 

In the opener, Coleman crushed a one-out pitch in the third inning deep over the left field fence giving Western a quick 1-0 lead.

 

Nursing a one run lead going into the eighth, Coleman again delivered, this time with an RBI single to left giving Western a two-run lead, 4-2.

 

D. J Mulhall (Stratford, CT) went 2-4 and scored two runs in the win.

 

Bill Green (Montgomery, NY) went 2-3 with an RBI for the Owls in the loss.

 

Lou Parise (North Haven, CT) got the win, pitching seven strong innings, allowing only two runs on six hits. Parise, who struck out five in the game, improved to 2-0.

 

Jim Dunn (New Fairfield, CT) got his first save of the season, striking out two Keene State Owls in the final frame.

 

James Slack (Manchester, NH) suffered his first defeat of the season, allowing four runs on six hits.

 

In the nightcap, the Western bats exploded in the bottom of the seventh.

 

Trailing by one run going into the frame, 2-1, Western scored six runs with two outs to cruise to victory.

 

Leadoff hitter, Kevin Darcey's (Levittown, NY) RBI single up the middle tied the game at two. Following a walk to Mulhall, Justin McCulloch (Waterbury, CT) smacked a double deep into the left field gap, plating two runners and giving the Colonials a 4-2 lead. Eben McKnight (Windsor, CT) drew a walk following the deep double, bringing Coleman to the plate. Coleman, who was hit by a pitch in the opener following his home run, belted the pitch over the deep left field wall giving the Colonials a commanding 7-2 lead.

 

      John Grainger (Keene, NH) had two RBI in the nightcap for the Owls.

 

Mike Troester (New Milford, CT) picked up the win in relieve, striking out four and not allowing a hit two and one thirds innings pitched. Troester improves to 2-1.

 

Peter Bergeron (Keene, NH) fell to 0-4, allowing four runs on six hits.

 

The Colonials improved to 11-9 overall, and 4-1 in the conference.

 

Keene State fell to 9-8 on the season, and 3-2 in the conference.
