Baseball: Owls Fall to Fitchburg State 5-3

'KEENE, N.H. 4/15/04 - Justin Schultz (Pepperell, Mass.) had a pair of RBIs and Joe Allen (Taunton, Mass.) went 8 1/3 strong innings on the mound to lead Fitchburg State College to a 5-3 non-conference baseball victory over Keene State College at Owl Athletic Complex on Thursday afternoon.

It was the third straight loss for KSC (9-9) while FSC, off to its best start, improves to 14-6.

Fitchburg State got on the board in the first inning when Dustin Fredieu (Farmersville, La.) scored on a double steal.  KSC answered with two in the bottom of the second.  Jeremy Schilling (Centerville, Mass.) scored on a sacrifice fly from Matt Beam (Alstead, N.H.) and John Grainger (Keene, N.H.) came around on a two out single off the bat of Matt Orszulak (Campton, N.H.).

The Falcons scored three runs in the sixth to take the lead for good.  Schultz had an RBI triple to tie the game.  A bloop double from Brian Milleisen (Miller Place, N.Y.) put FSC up 3-2 and Tim Sullivan (Tewksbury, Mass.) plated another run with a line single. They added one more run on Schultz's double in the seventh.

KSC made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth.  John Grainger (Keene, N.H.) had an RBI single, but the Owls left the bases loaded.

Allen, who had five strikeouts, improved his record to 2-2 with the win while KSC starter Corey Bell (Swanzey, N.H.) (2-1), who also fanned five, suffered his first loss of the season.

Beam, Orszulak, and Grainger each had two hits and RBI to lead KSC's 12 hit attack.

Keene State returns to Little East action on Saturday with a twinbill at Southern Maine 12 p.m.).
