SPRINGFIELD, MASS. 9/1/04 - Freshman Breanne Lucey (Keene, N.H.)
made an impressive collegiate debut scoring two goals with an
assist, including the game-winner with 4:46 remaining to lead
visiting Keene State College to a 3-1 non-conference victory over
Western New England College in the season opener for both teams.
After a scoreless first half, Lucey put the Owls ahead 1-0 when
she fired home a shot off her own rebound at the 65:15 mark.
WNEC tied the match when sophomore Kristin Thornton (Bedford,
N.H.) scored on a penalty kick (following a Keene hand ball) at
80:14. Lucey again scored off another rebound shot at 85:14 and the
Owls sealed the win when sophomore Courtney Gately (Canton, Mass.)
scored 68 seconds later with an assist from Lucey.
"I thought we played well for our first game of the season,"
said KSC Coach Denise Lyons. "Many of the players are not familiar
with each other so it will take time for us to gel together as a
team."
Senior goalie Michelle Mason (Fairport, N.Y.) had one save for
KSC, which out shot WNEC by a 28-4 margin. Sophomore netminder
Marissa Sullivan (Halesite, N.Y.) made 11 saves for the Golden
Bears, including several nice stops in the first half.
KSC travels to Plattsburgh (NY) State this weekend to play in
the Cardinal Classic Tournament.
