KEENE, N.H. 9/25/04 - Breanne Lucey (Keene, N.H.) scored two
goals to lead Keene State College to a 4-3 Little East Conference
women's soccer victory over Western Connecticut State University at
Owl Athletic Complex on Saturday.
It was the first LEC game of the season for KSC (4-3, 1-0 LEC)
while WCSU drops to 7-3, (1-1 LEC).
Lucey, playing her first year of college soccer, finished off a
cross from Brittany Falukner (Lebanon, N.H.) to give KSC a 3-2 lead
early in the second half. It was her team-leading sixth goal of the
season. After KSC goalie Michelle Mason (Fairport, N.Y.) stopped a
point-blank shot from Nicole Corbin (Clinton, Conn.), Kerri
Paquette (Milbury, Mass.) fired a shot that alluded Colonial goalie
Ashley Griffin (Newington, Conn.) to give the Owls a key insurance
goal. They would need that goal after WCSU's Jessica Gomes
(Wallingford, Conn.) scored with just over a minute to play.
Western Conn. had the best scoring opportunity in the early in
the game. When Mason came out to cut down the angle, Corbin had an
open net, but shot hit off the far post at the 29:18 mark.
Corbin didn't miss her next opportunity. On a counter attack,
Gomes sent Corbin in alone and the junior put the Colonials up 1-0.
KSC got the equalizer seven minutes later when Katie Stevens
(Londonderry, N.H.) sent Lucey in for her first goal of the game.
Both teams traded goals 57 seconds apart later in the half. Kari
Guasco (Danbury, Conn.) fired a shot just over the reach of Mason
to make it 2-1 and Kaitie Bedigian (Northboro, Mass.) came back
with her second goal of the season for KSC.
Mason finished with fives saves while Griffin stopped four shots
for WCSU.
KSC host Clark University on Wednesday (7 p.m.).
