KEENE, N.H. 9/29/04 - John Harke (Leeds, Mass.) had two goals,
including the eventual game winner, and Jason Lombardo (Woburn,
Mass.) finished with a goal and three assists to lead Keene State
College to a 4-3 victory over 24th ranked Williams College in a
battle of top regional men's soccer teams in Keene on Wednesday.
"You never expect to score four goals against Williams," said KSC
Coach Ron Butcher. "We made it a lot harder than it should've been.
But we got some great goals tonight."
Ranked third in New England, Williams (3-2-1) took a 1-0 lead on
a goal by Brett Olsen (Norwell, Mass.) at the 15:05 mark. Olsen
took a feed from Thomas Day (Needham, Mass.) and fired a shot into
the far left side of the net.
The fifth ranked Owls (6-1-1) answered five minutes with a pair
of goals to go up 2-1. Eric Scott (West Springfield, Mass.) was set
up in front on a perfect passing play from Casey Banks
(Westborough, Mass.) and Lombardo for his fifth goal of the season.
Harke put the Owls ahead 36 seconds later when he deposited a pass
from Lombardo into the top of the net.
After KSC goalie Brandon Beck (Johnstown, N.Y.) made key stops
against Eph's John Hillman (La Jolla, Ca.) and Dan MacGregor
(Little Compton, R.I.), Lombardo scored from the far left side to
push KSC's lead up to 3-1. It was Lombardo's sixth goal of the
season.
Williams cut the lead to 3-2 when Day slid a shot under Beck
four minutes later. Harke netted his second of the game to extend
KSC's lead back up to two goals (4-2). It proved to be a key goal
after Hillman scored following a mix-up in KSC backfield.
Beck finished with seven saves for KSC while Nicholas Armington
made two saves for the Ephs.
