KEENE, N.H. 9/5/04 - Eric Scott's (West Springfield, Mass.) goal
at the 14:12 mark of the first half stood up as the game-winner as
Keene State College claimed its first Diadora-Dunkin' Donuts Soccer
Showdown Championship with a 1-0 victory over Roger Williams
University at Owl Athletic Complex on Sunday.
Keene State improves to 2-0 while Roger Williams goes to 1-1-1.
"It was a great test against an excellent team," said KSC Coach
Ron Butcher, whose Owls lost to RWU 1-0 in last year's ECAC
Tournament final.
Scott was at the right place at the right time. The Tournament's
offensive MVP, situated to the left side of the box, headed in
Jason Passifiume's (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) corner kick at the 14:12
mark. Passifiume had just entered the game.
Roger Williams scoring opportunities were few. Ryan Wohlstrom
(Guilford, Conn.) broke into the box early in the second half, but
his drive was smothered by Owl goalie Brandon Beck (Johnstown,
N.Y.). With just under four minutes to play, Beck was caught out of
position, but back Brendan Flynn (Dunbarton, N.H.) blocked
Wohlstrom's shot and moved the ball out of danger.
Beck finished with seven saves for the Owls while Kevin Deegan
(Symour, Conn.) made two saves for the Hawks.
KEENE, N.H. 9/5/04 - Junior Gbor's (Ansonia, Conn.) goal at the
4:38 mark of the second overtime lifted Albertus Magnus College to
a 1-0 victory over Lasell College in the first game of Sunday's
Diadora-Dunkin' Donuts Soccer Showdown in Keene, N.H.
Getting control of the ball off a rebound, Gbor scored from the
right side on a difficult angle shot. The ball went underneath a
diving Lasell goalie Greg Lillibridge (Clinton, N.Y.).
Lasell had a chance to win the game in the first overtime, but
Albertus Magnus goalie Mike Perreira (Bakersfield, CA) stopped
consecutive close range shots from Matt Denham (Framingham, Mass.)
and Brian Donnelly (Medford, Mass.) with 3:26 to play.
Perreira had eight saves for Albertus Magnus (1-1). Lillibridge
finished with six saves for Lasell College (0-2).
