'Providence, RI-Rhode Island College and Keene State College
played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in collegiate men's soccer
action on Thursday afternoon. The Anchormen are now 9-4-3 overall
and 4-0-2 in the Little East Conference. The Owls, ranked fourth in
New England, are 11-2-3 overall and 5-0-1 in the LEC.
With the tie, KSC can clinch the LEC regular-season title and
the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament with a win at
UMass-Boston on Saturday.
Keene State sophomore midfielder Greg Sauer (West Brookfield,
MA) scored in the tenth minute to open the game's scoring on a
corner kick. Freshman midfielder Alex Horne (Harvard, MA) had the
assist. It was Sauer's first goal of the season.
The lead was short-lived as RIC sophomore forward Kyle Genereux
(Harrisville, RI) converted on a pass from senior forward Kyle
Teixeira (Warren, RI) in the 12th minute.
KSC sophomore goalkeeper Cal Mintz (Westport, CT) made 12 saves,
including two big stops on Teixeira in the second overtime period,
to improve his record to 6-2-1. RIC sophomore goalkeeper Sean
Gonsalves (Somerset, MA) made ten saves, as he stays unbeaten on
the year with a 4-0-2 record.
"It was a war," said KSC Coach Ron Butcher. "The story of
the game was the goaltending. We had all types of chances to
score in regulation, but their goalie came up big. In the
overtime, Mintz was sensational."
In upcoming action, RIC will play at Eastern Connecticut on
Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m. Keene State will play at UMass Boston
on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m.
