CLEARWATER, FLA. 03/14/05 - The Keene State College baseball
team split two games against Husson College of Maine on Monday in
Clearwater, Fla. After defeating Husson 4-1 in the opener, the Owls
traded scores and suffered a 4-1 loss in the second game.
In the first game, a Ryan Jones' (Nashua, N.H.) triple at the
top of the third set-up an RBI fielder's choice by Mike Masseur
(Warwick, R.I.) to give the Owls a 2-0 lead. With one man on at the
top of the sixth inning, KSC extended its lead on junior transfer
Nick Arroyo's (Northridge, Ca.) RBI double. A run-producing single
by Greg Ford (Nashua, N.H.) secured the win.
Ford went three-for-three, including two triples and an RBI, to
lead KSC. Masseur, Arroyo, and Joe Rousseau (Nashua, N.H.) each had
an RBI. The Owls had seven hits in the game.
Freshman Jon Young (1-0) (Rindge, N.H.) picked up his first
collegiate win on a one-hit, one-run ball game. He struck out six
and walked four in six innings on the mound.
"Jon threw very well for us today," said KSC Coach Ken Howe. "We
had great defense behind him, and we came out and hit the ball
well."
Robert Webber (0-2) (Augusta, Me.) took the loss for Husson.
In the second game, the Owls scored their only run on a
sacrifice fly by Robert Merrill (Colchester, Conn.) in the bottom
of the fourth inning. Peter Hall (Danielson, Conn.), Pat Austin
(Wallingford, Conn.), and Jeremy Schilling (Centerville, Mass.)
produced KSC's only hits in the game.
Mike Corsano (0-2) (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) took the loss for the
Owls. He fanned five, and allowed four runs in five and two-thirds
inning on the mound. Jim Slack (Manchester, N.H.) had one strike
out in relief.
James Gray (Corinth, Me.) earned the win for Husson.
Keene State (3-1) will face Nichols College in a non-conference
twin-bill on Tuesday.
