ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. 3/19/05 - Everything went right for the
Keene State College baseball team in a doubleheader sweep (2-1 and
7-1) over Salve Regina University at Miller Huggins Field in St.
Petersburg, Fla., on Saturday. The Owls got two complete games from
their starting pitches, banged out a combined 21 hits, and didn't
commit an error in the two games. In the opener, the Owls picked up
a run in the first inning on a fielder's choice by Josh Watkins
(Keene, N.H.). KSC scored the game-winning run in the sixth inning.
Watkins, who opened the inning with a double, came around to score
on a sacrifice fly by Matt Orszulak (Campton, N.H.). Ryan Jones
(Nashua, N.H.), Greg Ford (Nashua, N.H.), and Watkins had two hits
each for KSC. Jon Young (Rindge, N.H.), a sophomore transfer from
Franklin Pierce, tossed a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and no
walks. His improves to 2-0.
In the second game, Mike Corsano (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) gave up
three hits, fanned nine batters, and didn't allow a walk to notch
his first win of the season. He got plenty of support at the plate.
KSC scored two runs in the first on a pass ball and sacrifice fly.
The Owls added five more runs in the sixth. Nick Arroyo
(Northridge, Ca.), John Grainger (Keene, N.H.), Mike Masseur
(Warwick, R.I.) and Pat Austin (Wallingford, Conn.) had run
producing hits in the uprising. Grainger finished the game with
three hits and Jeremy Schilling (Centerville, Mass.) had two
singles.
After taking Sunday off, Keene State (7-3) resumes its schedule
with a doubleheader against Ramapo (N.J.) College on Monday.
