'KEENE, N.H. 9/3/05 - Keene State College broke open a close
game with three second half goals en route to a season-opening 4-0
victory over Husson College of Bangor, Me., in the second game of
Diadora-Dunkin' Donuts Soccer Showdown in Keene on Saturday.
Junior midfielder Eric Scott (West Springfield, Mass.) scored
Keene State's first goal of the season on a penalty kick at the
19:07 mark. Sophomore midfielder Ralph Rocco (Groton, Mass.) was
taken down in the box to create the opportunity. Brian Crook
(Wareham, Mass.) had a chance to add to the Owls' lead with 1:15 to
play in the half, but Husson goalie Chris Jackson (Timberlane,
N.H.) tipped his attempt over the crossbar.
KSC scored two goals within a three minute span to pull ahead
midway in the second half. Freshman Mike Cooley, a top
recruit from Northborough, Mass. headed in a cross from Caleb
Patterson (Barrington, N.H.) and Patterson, from the left flank,
found the far right corner to make it a 3-0 game. Sophomore Colin
Bailey (Jeffersonville, Vt.) completed the scoring with his first
college goal at the 77:15 mark.
Making his first start in goal, sophomore Cal Mintz (Westport,
Conn.) finished with one save to post his first career
shutout. Jackson stopped four shots for the Eagles, who had
just three shots in the game.On Sunday, KSC faces New England
College at 2 p.m. Western New England takes on Husson in the
earlier game at Noon.
KEENE, N.H. 9/3/05 - Evan Heymann (Ipswich, Mass.) had a goal
and two assists to lead Western New England College to a 5-0
shutout victory over New England College in a first round game of
the Diadora-Dunkin'Donuts' Men's Soccer Showdown played Saturday at
Keene State's Owl Athletic Complex. WNEC improves to 2-0. It was
the first game of the season for NEC.
WNEC senior Scott Meikle (New Milford, Conn.) scored the only
goal in the first half (4:39) when he fired a shot past NEC goalie
Kris Corwin (Corning, N.Y.) following a scramble in front of the
net.
The Golden Bears pulled away with three quick goals in a span of
six minutes early in the second half. Paul Russo (Dix Hill,
N.Y) finished off a cross from Heymann at 47:05. Three minutes
later, Heymann found the back of the net on a breakout, and Michael
Zawislak (Newark, Del) put in a cross from Heymann to give WNEC a
4-0 lead. Mike Schnepp (Feeding Hills, Mass.) added
another goal later in the half to make it 5-0.
Chris Wilk (Derry, N.H.) finished with seven saves to post his
second shutout of the season for the Golden Bears. Corwin had 3
saves for the Pilgrims, who were limited to just two shots on goal.
