'SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Western New England College finally won a
close game and it couldn't have come at a better time.
Senior forward Evan Heymann (Ipswich, MA) scored the game winner
in the 47th minute as the Golden Bears defeated visiting Keene
State College 1-0 in a non-conference men's soccer match at rainy
Suprenant Field Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 17)
Heymann tallied his fourth goal of the season only 1:10 into the
second half with an assist from senior midfielder Tim Larocca (East
Longmeadow, MA).
Entering the contest Western New England College was 2-4 in
one-goal contests this fall, losing its last four.
Senior goalkeeper Chris Wilk (Derry, NH) only needed to make one
save to gain his sixth shutout of the season. Sophomore Peter
Kersker (Beverly, MA) stopped four shots for the Owls.
Western New England College is now 10-5-1 after hitting
the 10-win plateau for the third straight season third straight
year (and fifth time in the last six seasons).
The Golden Bears end their regular campaign with a pair of Great
Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matches against Emerson on
October 21 and at Norwich on October 25.
The post-season playoffs begin in less than two weeks and close
matches are the norm at tournament time.
Keene State, ranked seventh in the NSCAA Division III New
England poll, falls to 10-4-1.
