'KEENE, N.H. 10/18/06 - Kathleen Keniston (Minneapolis, Minn.)
and Katrina Stauch (New Lebanon, N.Y.) came off the bench to score
two goals each to lead Keene State College to a 5-2 non-conference
women's soccer victory over Tufts University in Keene on Wednesday.
It was the second win in a row for Keene State (9-7). Ranked
sixth in New England, Tufts (6-3-2) saw its six seven game unbeaten
streak, which includes six straight wins come to an end.
Keniston gave Keene State a 1-0 lead at the 29:14 mark. The
sophomore midfielder broke in from the left corner and beat Tufts
goalie Annie Ross (Newton, Mass.) with a shot the far side of the
net.
Tufts had a couple of solid opportunities to tie the game later
in the half. Sara Raley's (Centennial, Co.) drive hit off the
crossbar and Martha Furtek's (East Falmouth, Mass.) breakaway shot
was stopped on a diving save by Owl goalie Liz Rosen (Swanzey,
N.H.).
Renee Halsey (Francestown, N.H.) put KSC ahead 2-0 late in the
half when she finished a touch pass from Breanne Lucey (Keene,
N.H.).
Keniston's second goal of the game and fifth of the season
extended the Owls' lead to 3-0 1:18 in the second half.
Keniston took a lead pass from Michelle Boland (Worcester, Mass.)
and broke in alone for the goal.
Tufts cut the Owls' lead to 3-2 on a pair of goals by Lauren
Fedore (East Lansing, Mich.). Her first goal came when she picked
up a lose ball in front of the goal. The second goal, her
seventh of the season, came on a shot from 24-yards out that went
just under the cross bar.
Freshman Katrina Stauch (New Lebanon, N.Y.) scored a couple of
key insurance goals, her second and third of the season, to push
Keene State's lead back up to 5-2.
Rosen had seven saves for the Owls. Ross finished with
three saves for the Jumbos.
Both teams will return to league play on Saturday. KSC hosts
UMass-Dartmouth (1 p.m.) and Tufts is home against Williams (12
p.m.).
It was KSC first win over Tufts since 2002 when the Owls edged
the Jumbos 1-0 in a NCAA Tournament game.
