'KEENE, N.H. 10/25/06 - It might have been "Senior Night" at Owl
Athletic Complex, but it was a freshman, Kendra Spencer
(Petoskey, Mich.) who netted the lone goal of the game in Keene
State's 1-0 shutout non-conference women's soccer win over
Bridgewater State on Wednesday.
Winners of four straight, KSC improves to 11-7. The
Bridgewater State Bears drops to 8-5-3.
Spencer's goal, her sixth of the season, came at the 28:57 mark
of the first half when she chipped a shot over the head of
Bridgewater goalie Emily Schlosser (Petersham, Mass.).
Spencer had a chance to get her second of the game early in the
second half, but her shot was tipped over the cross bar by
Schlosser, who finished with 13 saves.
KSC couldn't capitalize on several opportunities scoring chances
later in the second half. Michelle Boland (Worcester, Mass.)
clanged a shot off the cross bar, and Renee Halsey (Francestown,
N.H.) had four quality shots on goal.
The Bears best opportunity to tie the game came with 2:30 to
play. With KSC goalie Liz Rosen (Swanzey, N.H.) out of the
position, KSC sweeper Jessica Pepin (Bow, N.H.) knocked a way a
shot from Julie Sullivan (Whitman, Mass.)
"The last thing I wanted to do was go into overtime," Pepin
said. "As soon as I saw Liz go down, I sprinted back and
threw myself at the ball. It got really scary at the end, but
fortunately we were able to hang on for the win.
Rosen stopped six shots to notch her fifth shutout of the
season.
Owl seniors Tara Wagner (Avon, Conn.), Ali Corso (Farmington,
Conn.), Courtney Gately (Canton, Mass.), and Katie Stevens
(Londonderry, N.H.) were honored prior to the game.
Keene State wraps up its regular season at UMass-Boston on
Saturday (1 p.m.). Bridgewater State is at Framingham State
on Saturday (11 a.m.)
