'KEENE, N.H. 10/30/06 - Mike Reda's (Medford, Mass) goal at the
6:37 mark of the second overtime lifted UMass-Boston to a 3-2 win
over Keene State College in a Little East Conference men's soccer
game played at Owl Athletic Complex on Monday.
With the loss, KSC (12-5-1, 4-2-1 LEC) will be the second
seed in the upcoming LEC tournament and host third seed R.I.
College on Thursday at 6 p.m. With the win, UMB (11-7, 4-3 LEC)
gains the fourth and final seed in the tournament and will travel
to top seed Plymouth State on Thursday.
The Owls didn't waste anytime getting on the board. Eric
Scott (West Springfield , Mass.) took a center pass from Scott
Cluff (Kingston, Mass.) and beat the Beacon goalie with a shot to
the far top corner of the net at the 1:03 mark. It was
Scott's seventh goal of the season.
The Beacons tied the game 1-1 on a quick free kick by Romeo Zeqo
(Medford, Mass.) that went over the shoulder of Owl goalie Peter
Kersker (Beverly, Mass.) from the top of the box.
Igor DaCruz (Cambridge, Mass.) put in a rebound of a shot
by Emile Pierre-Louis (Medford, Mass.) to give UMass-Boston a 2-1
lead at the 56:13 mark.
Zeqo had a couple of chances to give UMB a two goal lead later
in the half but his first shot just rolled by the far post and his
second shot hit off the cross bar.
KSC's had an opportunity to tie the game at the 17:02 mark when
Brendan Flynn's (Dunbarton, N.H.) header off a throw-in went just
over the cross bar.
The Owls got the equalizer with 5:58 remaining in the second
half when Alex Horne, after being pulled down in the box, scored on
a penalty kick to the upper left corner.
In the first overtime, Cluff's shot following a throw-in just
missed the far post. KSC flooded the UMB net with multiple
shots in the final moments of the first overtime, but couldn't get
on the game-winner.
Minutes into the second overtime, Ralph Roco and Horne had bids
off a corner were stopped by UMB goalie Paul Maniscalco.
Moments later Reda picked up a loose ball and fired in the
game-winner for the Beacons.
Kersker had four saves for the Owls while Maniscalco stopped
nine shots for the Beacons.
