'DANBURY, CT - Breanne Lucey (Keene, NH)scored the game-winning
goal to lift #3 seed Keene State College to a 1-0 upset victory
over #2 seed Eastern Connecticut State University in the semifinals
of the Little East Conference Women's Soccer Tournament at the
Westside Athletic Complex Friday night.
Winners of seven straight games, the Owls, 14-7, advance to the
championship game against Western Connecticut State University on
Saturday at 2 p.m. The Colonials defeated Rhode Island
College, 4-0 earlier today in the other semifinal match.
It will be KSC's eighth straight trip to the LEC finals. They
won the championship in 2003 and 2004. KSC has faced Western Conn.
four times in the finals (1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002).
Lucey put the Owls on the scoreboard with her third goal of the
season in the 38th minute of play. She received a pass in the
middle of the box from Renee Halsey (Francestown, NH) from the
right side of the goal. "Renee gave Breanne a nice through
ball pass and she put it a way," said KSC Coach Denise Lyons.
"It was a great goal."
Lyons said it was her team's best performance of the
season. "They played for 90 minutes tonight," she said.
"They didn't want to walk of the field without a victory."
Liz Rosen (Swanzey, NH) made three stops for the Owls to record
her sixth shutout of the season.
Megan Gloster (Agawam, MA) turned away four shots for the
Warriors before yielding to Kim Church (Farmington, CT) for the
final 45 minutes. Church made two saves.
Eastern Connecticut, the defending LEC Tournament champions,
falls to 12-6-2 on the season.
The champion of the LEC Tournament receives and automatic berth
into the NCAA Division III National Tournament which begins on
November 10.
