LEC W. Soccer: Lucey's Goal Send Owls to Finals

'DANBURY, CT - Breanne Lucey (Keene, NH)scored the game-winning goal to lift #3 seed Keene State College to a 1-0 upset victory over #2 seed Eastern Connecticut State University in the semifinals of the Little East Conference Women's Soccer Tournament at the Westside Athletic Complex Friday night.

Winners of seven straight games, the Owls, 14-7, advance to the championship game against Western Connecticut State University on Saturday at 2 p.m.  The Colonials defeated Rhode Island College, 4-0 earlier today in the other semifinal match.

It will be KSC's eighth straight trip to the LEC finals. They won the championship in 2003 and 2004. KSC has faced Western Conn. four times in the finals (1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002).

Lucey put the Owls on the scoreboard with her third goal of the season in the 38th minute of play.  She received a pass in the middle of the box from Renee Halsey (Francestown, NH) from the right side of the goal.  "Renee gave Breanne a nice through ball pass and she put it a way," said KSC Coach Denise Lyons.  "It was a great goal."

Lyons said it was her team's best performance of the season.  "They played for 90 minutes tonight," she said.  "They didn't want to walk of the field without a victory."

Liz Rosen (Swanzey, NH) made three stops for the Owls to record her sixth shutout of the season.

Megan Gloster (Agawam, MA) turned away four shots for the Warriors before yielding to Kim Church (Farmington, CT) for the final 45 minutes.  Church made two saves.

Eastern Connecticut, the defending LEC Tournament champions, falls to 12-6-2 on the season.

The champion of the LEC Tournament receives and automatic berth into the NCAA Division III National Tournament which begins on November 10.
