Men's Soccer: No. 12 Owls Fall To No. 5 Williams 3-1

'KEENE, N.H. 9/27/06 -  Williams College scored all of its goals in the second half to post a 3-1 non-conference men's soccer victory over Keene State College in a battle of nationally ranked teams at Owl Athletic Complex on Wednesday.

With the scored tied at 1-1, Dana Leary (Washington, D.C.) converted a cross from Brett Olsen (Norwell, Mass.) to give the Ephs a 2-1 lead. Olsen added an insurance goal in the closing second to account for the final score.

Keene State (7-2), ranked 14th in the nation and second in the region, had the best opportunity to get on the board in a scoreless first half.  Alex Horne (Harvard, Mass.) fired a shot to the far corner that was stopped by Eph's goalie Jeff Castiglione (West Hartford, Conn.) at the 8:32 mark.

Williams (5-0), ranked sixth in the nation and first in the region, had a couple of strong bids early in the second half.  Matt Nolan's (Palo Alto, Ca.) drive to the near corner and Patrick Huffer's header (Boulder, Co.) were both saved by Owl goalie Peter Kersker (Beverly, Mass.).

Nolan gave Williams a 1-0 lead at the 65:15 mark when his shot hit off the cross bar and into the net.

Keene State answered five minutes later when Pelse Mesa (Manchester, N.H.) put a rebound by Castiglione for his sixth goal of the season.

Nolan had a chance to give WC a lead, but he was denied on a diving save by Kersker,  Kersker finished with nine saves for the Owls while Castiglione had five saves for Williams.

Keene State travels to rival Plymouth State on Saturday (5 p.m.).
