W. Soccer: Owls Fall to Union 3-1

'SCHENECTADY, NY 9/3/06- Junior midfielder Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA/King Regional) scored two goals to lead Union College to a 3-1 women's soccer triumph over Keene State Sunday at College Park. The Dutchwomen and Owls both stand 1-1 after their opening weekend of play.

Ashley Brown (Plainville, CT/Suffield Academy) scored the other goal for Union, which had a 14-6 shot advantage of the day. The Dutchwomen also had six corners to the visitors' three.

Cuozzo opened the scoring at 27:59, with a shot to the high left side of the net after a feed from Stephanie Cronan (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead). Keene State quickly tied the game at 28:55 as Breanne Lucey (Keene, NH/Keene) scored off a corner kick from Tara Wagner (Avon, CT/Avon). The teams remained tied at 1-1 at the half.

At 52:16, Cuozzo gave the Dutchwomen the lead for good. Once again Cronan provided the assist, as she carried through defenders and dished to Cuozzo, who scored in the high right side of the cage. Brown wrapped up the scoring to provide the 3-1 final with an insurance goal at 75:40. She took a pass from freshman Katie Weinstein (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead) and scored from a cross shot from the right side.

Freshman goalkeeper Mia Simone (Rexford, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) made three saves for Union, posting her first career victory. Liz Rosen (Swanzey, NH/Mt. Mansfield (VT)) made five saves for the Owls.

"I thought we played a strong first half, but ran out of steam in the second period, " said KSC Coach Denise Lyons.  "Overall it was a good tournament for us to see where we stand at this point of the season."
