KEENE, N.H. 10/16/07 - Alex Horne (Harvard, Mass.) had two
goals, including the game-winner with 3:44 to play to give Keene
State College a 2-1 non-conference men's soccer victory over
Western New England College at Owl Athletic Complex on Tuesday
night.
Undefeated in its last seven games, the Owls improve to
7-4-4. The Golden Bears (9-5-2) saw their two game winning
streak come to end.
Horne's winner, his team-leading seventh goal of the season, was
set up on a crossing ball from Ian Kelly (Taunton,
Mass.).
"The ball was intended for Mike Cooley, but he let me have it,"
said Horne. "I was able to get a touch on the ball and tuck
it into the net. Beating a team like this is huge for us."
The Owls controlled play throughout a scoreless first half.
Jeremy Kelsey (Gilford, N.H.) had a chance to get the Owls on the
board at the 23:36 mark, but his point-blank shot was stopped by
WNEC goalie Steve Hennesey (Essex Junction, Vt.). Kelsey had a bid
later in the half from just inside the box that Hennesey knocked
away with a diving save.
Both teams had scoring opportunities in the final minutes of the
fist half. Owls goalie Cal Mintz (Westport, Conn.) stopped a
free kick from 45-yard out by Matt Sullivan (Springfield, Mass.)
with 2:56 to play. With 52 second to play, Hennessey tipped a
shot by Cam Blair (Keene, N.H.) over the cross bar.
Mintz stopped a pair of strong scoring chances by WNEC early in
the second half. The senior goalie stopped a bid by Dan Hare
(Staatsburg, N.Y.) at the left side of the net and got a hand on a
drive by Sullivan.
Horne broke the scoreless tie at the 52:12 mark when he took a
cross from Eric Martens (Peterborough, N.H.) and beat Hennesey. "It
was a great ball from Eric," said Horne. "He looked up, made
eye contact with me, and I knew he was going to send it to. I
just wanted to finish off such a nice pass."
The Golden Bears answered just 11 seconds later on a shot by
Mike Stewart (Springfield, Mass.) that found the top corner of the
net.
Mike Cooley (Northborough, Mass.) had a chance to put the Owls
ahead at the 73:08 mark, but his header clanged off the cross
bar.
Horne second goal of the game with 3:44 to play gave KSC a
2-1. WNEC had a chance to get the equalizer with 1:28 to
play, but Mintz came out of the net and corralled a header by Brian
Dill (Portland, Conn.).
Mintz finished with six saves for the Owls. Hennesey stopped
nine shots for the Golden Bears.
\KSC returns to LEC play at UMass-Boston on Saturday. WNEC
travels to Endicott for a CCC game on Saturday.
