BOSTON, MA - The Keene State College men's soccer team netted
three second-half goals, including the eventual game-winner by
senior defender Caleb Patterson (Barrington, NH), to defeat host
University of Massachusetts Boston, 4-2, this afternoon in a Little
East Conference match at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of
UMass Boston.
The Beacons fall to 8-7-0 overall and 1-5-0 in LEC play, while
the Owls improve to 8-4-4 and 3-2-1.
The first three and half minutes of the match saw a flurry of
scoring as UMass Boston wasted no time getting on the board when
senior midfielder Emile Pierre-Louis (Medford, MA) found freshman
midfielder Alex Cavallero (Lenox, MA) at the left corner of the box
for a wicked shot that ricocheted off the Keene State keeper and
into the back of the net for his third goal of the season just 37
seconds into the match to give the Beacons a 1-0 edge. The
Owls answered just 33 seconds later when Scott Cluff (Kingston, MA)
sent a cross from the right corner of the field to junior
midfielder Ben Allenet (Lanfains, France), who then made a move and
found the back of the right corner of the net for his second goal
of the year to knot the contest at 1-1 at the 1:10 mark of the
first half. The Beacons took just under two minutes to
reclaim the lead when Pierre-Louis found senior midfielder
Guilherme Goncalves (Medford, MA) at the top of the box where he
ripped a shot, from 18 yards out, into the back of the net for his
third tally of the season and a UMB 2-1 edge with 3:09 gone in the
match.
The teams remained scoreless for the remainder of the half and into
the second half until Allenet took a shot that deflected off the
Beacons' defense and onto the foot of sophomore defender Ross
Stanton (Glenmont, NY), who scored his first goal of the season
into the right corner at 57:49 of the second half to tie the
contest at 2-2 for Keene State. Patterson then gave the Owls
the lead when he converted a cross, which was lofted high into the
box by junior defender Steve Attardo (Braintree, MA), into the
right corner of the net for a 3-2 lead at the 63:06 mark of the
second stanza.
The Beacons had a chance to tie the game when Cavallero made a bid
for his second goal of the day, but Patterson blocked the shot at
66:42 to keep Keene State in front.
Sophomore forward Mike Cooley (Northborough, MA) supplied an
insurance goal for the Owls with a line drive, blasted from 20
yards out, into the upper left corner of the net at 77:52 for a 4-2
advantage.
UMass Boston junior keeper Paul Maniscalco (Hanover, MA) made eight
saves on the day, while senior Cal Mintz (Westport, CT) stopped
four shots to earn the victory for Keene State.
The Beacons will be in action again on Tuesday, October 23 when
they travel to Cambridge, MA to take on MIT at 3:30 p.m., while the
Owls host Middlebury College on October 23 at 7:00 p.m.
