Kelsey's 2-OT Goal Gives KSC Upset Win

KEENE, N.H. 10/23/07 - Jeremy Kelsey (Gilford, N.H.) picked a perfect time to get his first goal of the season.  The senior midfielders' goal at the 7:27 mark of the second overtime gave the Keene State College men's soccer team a 2-1 upset win over Middlebury College at Owl Athletic Conference on Tuesday night.

Undefeated in its last nine games (7-0-2), Keene State, ranked 10th in New England, improves to 9-4-4. Middlebury (11-2), which entered the game ranked fifth nationally and first in the region, had its four game winning streak come to an end.

Kelsey game-winner was set up Ryan Farnsworth (Merrimack, N.H.).  Farnsworth headed a through ball past two Panther defenders to sprinting Kelsey.  Kelsey one-timed the ball past Middlebury goalie Jamie Wheeler (New York, N.Y.) into the right top corner of the nets.

"I told Farnsworth to send it through and I would take care of the rest," said Kelsey.  "If we play our best, we can play with anyone."

"I'm so proud of how the guys played," said KSC Coach Ron Butcher.  "I keep on telling them that they can be a good team.  I'm just waiting for them to show me.  If we don't move up in the rankings, I'll be surprised."

Middlebury jumped out to a 1-0 lead 3:14 into the game.  Casey Ftorek (Wolfeboro, N.H.) was able to get control of a lose ball in the box and beat KSC goalie KSC goalie Cal Mintz (Westport, Conn.).

With the rain intensifying in the second half, the Owls were able to tie the game at the 75:49 mark on a blast from just beyond the 18-yard line by Mike Cooley (Northborough, Mass. Cooley took a couple of dribbles to set himself then let go the drive for his seventh goal of the season.

Mintz, who turned aside six shots, saved the day for the Owls with a great save in the first overtime.  The senior goalie got his body in front of a screaming line-drive shot by Baer Fisher (Kenilworth, Ill.).  The ball deflected off his shoulder and over the cross bar.

Wheeler finished the game with six saves for the Panthers.

Keene State wraps up its Little East schedule on Saturday when it hosts Western Conn. (1 p.m.).  Middlebury is at Trinity (Conn.) on Saturday (11 a.m.).
