Providence, R.I. 10/6/07 - Keene State sophomore forward Mike
Cooley's (Northborough, MA) scored on a penalty kick in the 29th
minute to help lead the Owls to a 2-0 victory over Rhode Island
College at the RIC Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon. Both teams
had chances in the first half, but it was the Owls who struck
first. The Anchormen were called for a foul in the goal box, which
led to Cooley's fourth goal of the season. Rhode Island College
senior goalkeeper Jadon Neves (Warren, RI) did his best to keep the
Anchormen in the game, making a highlight, diving stop from point
blank on a Keene State junior forward Alex Horne (Harvard, MA) shot
to keep the contest a one-goal affair after 45 minutes. Keene State
turned up the heat in the second stanza, outshooting the Anchormen,
11-3, and keeping RIC hemmed in its own territory. Junior
midfielder Ben Allenet (Lanfains, France) added an important
insurance goal, netting his first of the season, on a shot from
outside the box that eluded a diving Neves. Keene State senior
goalkeeper Cal Mintz (Westport, CT) was steady between the posts,
making two stops to improve his record to 2-4-3 with his third
shutout of the season. Neves made seven saves as his record falls
to 2-4-1. The Anchormen are currently 5-5-2 overall and 1-2-1 in
the Little East Conference. The Owls get over the .500 mark for the
first time in '07, upping their record to 5-4-3 and 1-2-1 in league
play. RIC remains winless against Keene State since the Owls joined
the Little East in 1997. KSC is 12-0-1 in 13 meetings during that
time span.
"We're still scraping for goals, but this wins gives us a
chance to get back into the tournament picture," said KSC Coach Ron
Butcher. The loss marks the second consecutive week Rhode Island
College has been shut out in Little East action, falling, 1-0, last
Saturday at Western Connecticut. The Anchormen have been held
scoreless over the last 238:52 of action. In upcoming action, Rhode
Island College will play at Salem State on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 7
p.m. The Owls will travel to R.P.I. on Oct. 10.
