NCAA M. Soccer: Ephs Edge Owls 2-1

KEENE, N.H. 11/11/07 -  Sophomore midfielder Conor Smith (Yardley, Pa.) had two goals, including the game-winner at the 66:14 mark of the second half to lead Williams College to a 2-1 victory over Keene State College in a second-round game of the NCAA Division III tournament played Sunday afternoon at Keene's Owl Athletic Complex.

Williams (12-4-2) advances to the New England regional tournament. Keene State concludes its season with a 15-5-5 record.  It's the third consecutive year the Ephs have beaten the Owls in the second round of the tournament.  Williams won 2-0 in 2005 and 4-0 last year.

Williams had a chance to get on the board at the 26;10 mark of the first half.  Junior back Chris Gocksch's (Centerport, N.Y.) header on a corner kick was knocked away by KSC junior back Ryan Farnsworth (Merrimack, N.H.).
Keene State took a 1-0 lead at the 26:33 mark.  Sophomore forward Scott Cluff (Kingston, Mass.) got around an Eph defender and sent a crossing ball to senior midfielder Caleb Patterson (Barrington, N.H.) who headed a shot into the net for his fourth goal of the season.

Williams answered seven minutes later at 33:33 when freshman forward Gaston Kelly ( Hingham, Mass.) crossed a ball to sophomore midfielder Conor Smith (Yardley, Pa.) who put the ball past the outstretched arms of KSC senior goalie Cal Mintz (Westport, Conn.).

Williams went ahead 2-1 at the 66:14 mark.  Senior back Ryan Pelletier (York, Me.) took a free kick from just beyond midfield.  Smith headed the ball and just inside into the far post for the game-winner.

KSC, which had trouble generating offensive opportunities, had a chance to tie the game with 2:34 to play, but Eph sophomore goalie Andrew Graham (Northbrook, Ill.)  made a save on junior forward's Alex Horne's (Harvard, Mass.) header.

Mintz finished with five saves for Keene State.  Graham stopped two shots for the Ephs.
