MANSFIELD, Conn. - Junior right fielder Greg Ford (NASHUA, NH)
and sophomore center fielder Jeff Perkins (DUNBARTON, NH) each
totaled three hits and three RBIs as the second-seeded Keene State
College baseball team defeated fifth-seeded University of
Massachusetts at Boston 11-6 in a Little East Conference Baseball
Tournament elimination game Friday night at the Eastern Baseball
Stadium.
The Owls (27-12/2-1) advanced in the losers' bracket to meet the
University of Southern Maine (27-14/2-1) in an 8:30 elimination
game tonight. The Beacons (18-19/1-2) were eliminated.
Keene State College broke a 2-2 tie with a four-run fifth
inning. Ford hit a two-out, two-run home run for the third and
fourth runs of the inning. Sophomore second baseman James Chevalier
(AMHERST, NH) had an RBI double and senior catcher John Grainger
(KEENE, NH) an RBI single in the fifth. Grainger went 3-for-6 with
two runs and two RBIs.
Keene State scored four runs in the ninth to increase its lead
to 11-4. Perkins had a two-out, bases-clearing double scoring
Grainger, freshman first baseman Beau Darak (LONDONDERRY, NH) and
junior outfielder Ben Fournier (CENTER HARBOR, NH).
In the bottom of the ninth, UMass Boston senior first baseman
Jaime Soto (PEABODY, MA) hit a two-out, two-run home run for the
five-run margin of victory. Soto and senior right fielder Sean
Ketterer (PLYMOUTH, MA) each totaled two hits and two RBIs.
Junior right-hander Phil Mabey (WILLIAMSTOWN, MA) went 6 2/3
innings, allowing four runs (three runs), six hits and two walks to
record the win. Mabey (3-1) struck out two.
University of Massachusetts at Boston left-hander Mike Andriano
(MASSAPEQUA, NY) was the losing pitcher, allowing seven runs, 10
hits and two walks. Andriano (5-3) struck out two.
