KEENE, N.H. 9/1/07 - Dan Riso's (Red Hook, N.Y.) goal at the
83:40 mark of the second half lifted Hobart College to a 2-1
victory over Worcester State College in the first game of the
WEGOTSOCCER-Diadoa Soccer Showdown in Keene on Saturday.
Riso buried a crossing ball from Sam Wisner (Wayland, Mass.) for
the game-winner.
Both teams traded goals in the first half. Worcester State got on
the board first on a nice individual effort by junior forward Brian
Anddrade (Hudson, Mass.) at the 20:44 mark. Hobart answered
seven minutes later when Justin Dotzman (Holland, Pa.) finished off
a lead pass from Keenan Simons (Bradenton, Fla.).
Worcester State goalie Daniel Hanson (Worcester, Mass.) kept it a
tie game when he tipped a short direct kick attempt by Tyler
Webster (Acton, Mass.) over the crossbar early in the second
half. Later in the half, Hobart goalie Phil DaCosta
(Manchester, N.H.) made a sliding save on a shot by Lancer forward
Eder Baptista (Pawtucket, R.I.).
That set the stage for Riso's winning goal later in the half.
DaCosta finished with two saves for the Statesman (1-0), who are
ranked 18th in the NSCAA pre-season poll. Hanson stopped four
shots for the Lancers (0-1).
KEENE, N.H. 9/1/07 - Ithaca College spoiled Keene State's home
opener with a 4-2 win over the Owls in the second game of the
WEGOTSOCCER-Diadoa Soccer Showndown at Owl Athletic Complex on
Saturday.
KSC netted the first goal of the game, but the Bombers scored three
unaswered goals to go up 3-1. KSC cut the lead to 3-2, before
Ithaca scored in the final minute of play.
Mike Cooley (Northboro, Mass.) had a goal and assist for the Owls
(0-1). Gerard Lewis (Scotia, N.Y.) tallied a goal and an assist for
Ithaca.
Sophomore forward Scott Cluff (Kingston, Mass.) gave KSC a 1-0 lead
at the 15:26 mark of the first half when he deposited Cooley's
rebound into the back of the net.
The Bombers scored two goals a minute apart to go up
2-1. Matt Dubois (Westbrook,Me.) converted a cross from
Lewis and Lewis scored from the right side.
Ithaca took a 3-1 lead at the 61:09 mark. With KSC goalie Cal
Mintz (Westport, Conn.) out of position, Jeff South (Aptos, Ca.)
put the ball into the open net.
Cooley cut the deficit of 3-2 when he blasted a shot from 18-yards
out into the far corner. Cooley had a chance to tie the game with
just under six minutes to play, bu his header sailed over the cross
bar.
Kurt Odenbach (Webster, N.Y.) scored an insurance goal for the
Bombers in the closing minute of play.
Mintz had six saves for the Owls. Andy Wilhelm (Elliot City,
Md.) stopped six shots for Ithaca.
