KEENE, N.H. 9/5/07 - Junior forward Alex Horne (Harvard, Mass.)
had two goals to lead the Keene State men's soccer team to its
first win of the season, a 3-0 non-conference shutout over
Springfield College in Keene on Wednesday night.
KSC improves to 1-2. Springfield drops to 1-2.
Horne's (Harvard, Mass.) goals, which gave KSC a 2-0 lead, came
four minutes apart early in the first half. His first goal
was set up after Mike Vitone (East Greenwich, R.I.) won a head ball
at the middle of the field. Horne's second goal came after a
fine passing play from Caleb Patterson (Barrington, N.H.) and Mike
Cooley (Northboro, Mass.).
KSC Coach Butcher said the difference between this weekend's games
and tonight was heart. "We had a tough practice and were
ready for tough, physical game," he said. "We played to our
strength which is our two strikers and it paid off."
"We were caught off guard this weekend," said Horne.
"Everyone knew we had to pick up the intensity. We had to
start our season sometime. This is a good start for us."
Scott Cluff (Kington, Mass.) scored on a rebound later in the
half to make it 3-0.
Horne had an opportunity for his third goal of the game when he
blasted a shot off the crossbar with 20 minutes to play.
Making his first college start, junior goalie Scott Panone
(Wolcott, Conn.) finished with four saves to notch the
shutout. Starting goalie Cal Mintz (Westport, Conn.) and
Ralph Rocco (Groton, Mass.) missed the game with injuries.
Springfield goalie B.J. Sturdivant (Bear, Del.) turned aside
nine Owl shots.
KSC travels to Wheaton College on Saturday for a key regional
game.
