Owl Bats Shatter Beacons; Darak Ties RBI Mark

 

            KEENE, N.H. 4/19/08 - Keen State bats erupted for a combined 27 runs and banged out 35 hits, including four home runs in a Little East baseball doubleheader sweep (13-2 and 14-8) over UMass-Boston at Owl Athletic Complex on Saturday.

            With R.I. College dropping two games to Eastern Conn., KSC (22-5, 7-1 LEC) moves into first place in the LEC standings.  The Owls extended their winning streak to nine games, one shy of the school record set last year.

            UMass-Boston falls to 12-17 (3-5 LEC).

            The first game featured a record-tying seven RBI performance by Beau Darak (Londonderry, N.H.)  The sophomore first baseman had a pair of home runs, three run blasts in the seventh and eighth innings.   Darak, who now has four home runs on the season, tied the record set by four players, including current Owl Greg Ford (Nashua, N.H.) and coach Mac Tiani.

            Junior Jamie Chevalier (Amherst, N.H.) also went deep, a solo shot in the eighth.  Ryan Jones (Nashua, N.H.) also chipped in with three hits.

            Freshman Ryan Walsh (Newton, Mass.) collected three hits, including a two-run home run for the Beacons in the first.

            Senior Jamie Morin (Goffstown, N.H.) pitched 7.2 innings of five hits ball to improve his record to 3-0.  He struck out six and walked two.

            Freshman, Mike Cain (Gloucester, Mass.), the second of four Beacon pitchers, took the loss (4-1).

            KSC sprayed the ball park with 19 more hits in the nightcap.  The Owls scored four runs in the second and eight more in the fourth. Jeff Perkins (Dunbarton, N.H.), and Anthony Cipolla (Glastonbury, Conn.) had RBI hits in the second. Ryan Jones (Nashua, N.H.)  cranked a grand-slam in the fourth.

            UMB got four runs back a fifth inning that included a two-run double by Mike Dorval (Belchertown, Mass.). 

            Doyon had four hits and three RBIs and Cippolla, Perkins, and Chevalier had three hits each in the second game. 

            Senior Phil Mabey (Williamstown, Mass.) started for KSC going 4.1 innings before handing the ball to freshman Corey Voght (Broad Brook, Conn.), who got the win (2-0).  Voght went 1.2 innings with two strikeouts and a walk.

Ed Lacourse (Manchester, N.H.), Chevalier, and Ford all pitched an inning.

            Beacon starter Mike Andriano (Messapequa, N.Y.) took the loss for UMB.

            KSC host UMass-Dartmouth on Sunday (12 p.m.).  The Beacons are at Curry on Tuesday.
