SPRINGFIELD, MASS. 4/23/08 - The Keene State baseball team let one
slip away on Wednesday, losing to Western New England College
8-7. Senior Ryan Kravontka knocked in the winning run for the
Golden Bears with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth
inning.
The loss snapped #14 ranked Keene State's (24-6) program best 11
game wining streak. WNEC improves to 25-11.
The Owls led 6-1 in the fourth, but couldn't hold on for the
non-conference victory.
KSC took a 3-1 lead in the second on a two-run home run by senior
rightfielder Greg Ford (Nashua, N.H.) and a RBI
single from junior centerfielder Jeff Perkins
(Dunbarton, N.H.).
The Owls added three more runs in the fourth with freshman
leftfielder Bobby Doyon (Keene, N.H.) delivering a
two-run single.
The Golden Bears came back with two runs in the fifth, one more in
the sixth, and took the lead (7-6) with a three-run seventh
inning.
The Owls tied the game on Ford's second home run of the game and
eighth of the season in the top of the ninth, but WNEC would plate
the game-winner in the bottom of the frame.
Sophomore first baseman Beau Darak (Londonderry,
N.H.) led KSC's 13-hit attack with three hits. Ford, Doyon,
and Jon Barber (Brattleboro, Vt.) chipped in with
two hits each.
Jamie Chevalier (Amherst, N.H.) started for the
Owls. Sophomore Mike Riley (East Hartford,
Conn.) one of six pitchers used by KSC took the loss.
Keene State returns home to face Fitchburg State on Thursday (3:30
p.m.)
