Owls Splt With USM; Pound out 19 hits in Nightcap

GORHAM, Maine 4/26/08 --  The Keene State baseball team pounded out 19 hits off the
offerings of four Huskies hurlers on the way to a 17-6 win in the second game of a Little East doubleheader against Southern Maine on Saturday.   The game was called after seven innings on the 10-run rule. The Huskies scored five runs in the eighth inning to snap a 7-7 tie en route to a 12-7 victory over the Owls in the first game at USM baseball stadium.     

The split leaves Southern Maine at 23-10 overall and 7-3 in the Little East.  Keene State is now 26-7 overall and 10-2 atop the LEC standings.
      

In the opener, Southern Maine squandered a 5-0 lead after fourinnings. USM fell behind 6-5 when Keene State scored four runs in the top of the seventh, then regained a 7-6 lead in the bottom half of the inning.  Keene tied the game in the eighth on an RBI single by senior
Joe Rousseau (Nashua, N.H.) before USM plated five runs on two hits,two hit batters, a fielder's choice and an outfield error.
    

Freshman Jordan Berthiaume (Berlin, Conn.) and junior Ryan Gaffney (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) each had three hits and two RBI in the game.  Junior Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering) had two hits and two RBI.  Junior Tim Therrian (New Portland, Maine/Carrabec), the third USM pitcher, went three innings to get the win and even his record at 2-2.
       

Rousseau had three hits and two RBI for Keene State.  Junior Jamie Chevalier (Amherst, N.H./Sou-hegan) was tagged with the loss.


In the second game, the Owls broke a 2-2 tie scoring five runs in the fourth and six more in the fifth to build a 13-5 lead.
       

Chevalier had four hits and scored twice to lead the Owls attack. Rousseau had another three hits, scored three times and drove in three.  Sophomore Beau Darak (Londonderry, N.H.), who had two hits, slammed a three-run homer in the fifth inning.  Seven of the nine Keene State starters had two or more hits.
       

Senior Phil Mabey (Williamstown, Mass.) picked up the win going the first five innings.  Sophomore Rob Delbuono (Trumbull, Conn.) pitched the final two innings.

For USM, junior Andrew Stacy (Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) and Gaffney each had two hits.  Sophomore Josh Mackey (Danvers, Mass.) hit a solo homer in the fourth.
       

Senior starter Adam Ross (Spruce Head, Maine/Rockland), the first of four USM pitchers, went 3.2 innings and took the loss.
       

 Southern Maine returns to action Sunday (12:00 p.m.) afternoon playing a Little East Conference doubleheader with the University of Massachusetts Boston at the USM Baseball Stadium.  Keene State returns to the state of Maine on Tuesday (4:00 pm.) to play a single game at St. Joseph's College.
