STANDISH, ME 5/1/08 - Senior Dustin
Spiller (Gorham, ME) hit a two-out single in the
bottom of the 10th with bases loaded to drive in two runs and lift
the Monks (26-14) past nationally ranked #16 Keene State (26-8),
5-4 in non-conference baseball action in Standish, Me on Thursday.
The Owls jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Junior
centerfielder Jeff Perkins (Dunbarton, N.H.)
opened the game with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by
junior second baseman Jamie Chevalier (Amherst,
N.H.).
The Monks, who have already earned an NCAA tournament berth, plated
three runs in the bottom of the second.
KSC tied the game with two runs in the top of the eighth on a
two-run single by senior shortstop Ryan Jones
(Nashua, N.H.)
The Owls took the lead (4-3) in the top of the 10th. Freshman
designated hitter John Barber (Brattleboro,
Vt.) started the inning with his fourth single of the game.
Sophomore Mike Burgoyne (Medford, Mass.), ran for
Barber, and moved up to third on a single by Jones, who had three
hits in the game. Burgoyne scored on a wild pitch to give KSC
a short-lived lead.
After striking out the first batter he faced, closer Greg
Ford (Nashua, N.H.) ran into trouble and couldn't hold the
lead.
Keene State travels to regional power Wheaton College on Friday (4
p.m.).
