SALISBURY, MD 8/30/08 - Keene State College battled St. Mary's
College of Maryland to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in the second game
of the Elmer Lord Soccer Classic at Salisbury, Maryland on
Saturday.
The Owls took a 1-0 lead at the 4:14 mark of the first half when
junior midfielder Scott Cluff (Kingston, Mass.)
finished off a crossing pass from freshman forward Alex
Lawson (Williamsport, Pa.).
St. Mary's tied the game on a goal by Chris Kravitz at the 61:32
mark of the second half. Peter Krech and Ben Gould assisted
on the goal.
The Owls turned up the pressure in the first overtime but
couldn't get the ball past Seahawk sophomore goalie Paul
Spranklin,who finished the game with eight saves. "He came up
with four incredible saves and we also had a goal called back,"
said KSC Coach Ron Butcher.
"Overall, I thought we played very well considering the hot
weather conditions. We just couldn's buy a goal in the second half
or overtime," he said.
Returning to the team after not playing last season, junior
Peter Kersker (Ipswich, Mass.) stopped four shots
for the KSC.
The Owls outshot the Seahawks 19-10. Keene State will
play host Salisbury University on Sunday at 3 p.m. The Sea Gulls,
ranked 22nd in the preseason poll, edged North Park (Ill.) 2-1 in
the tournament's opening game.
