SALISBURY, MD. 8/31/08 - The Keene State men's soccer team is
still searching for its first win of the season after dropping a
1-0 overtime game at #22 ranked Salisbury University at the Elmer
Lord Soccer Classic on Sunday.
The Owls (0-1-1) tied St. Mary's College of Maryland 1-1 in a
first-round game on Saturday. Alec Hargrove's goal at the
96:05 mark of the first overtime was the difference in the
game. After a miscue KSC's backfield, Hargrove, the
tournament's MVP, took a pass from Kenneth Price and beat Owl
keeper Peter Kersker (Ipswich, Mass.) from the
right side.
"Once again we struggled scoring goals," said KSC Coach
Ron Butcher. "I thought we played great in
the second half and overtime, but had nothing to show for it.
Although we came empty in the win column, I think we learned a lot
about the team."
Both teams mustered just three shots on goal. All three
shots came from Owl freshmen in the second
half. Alex Larson (Williamsport, Pa.)
had a pair and Quinton McMillian (Springfield,
Mass.) had one. Both Larson shots' were headers stopped by
Salisbury goalie Greg Wellinghoff.
Kersker finished the game with two saves for the Owls while
Wellinghoff was credited with three saves for the Sea Gulls (2-0).
Keene State plays Husson College of Maine next Saturday (1 p.m.)
in it's home opener.
