Owls Defeat USM 5-1 in LEC Opener

GORHAM, Maine -- After surrendering an early goal, the Keene State College Owls scored five unanswered goals en route to a 5-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's soccer match Saturday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field.

Sophomore forward Katie Bradford (Lebanon, N.H.) and senior midfielder Molly Brunelle (Walpole, N.H.) each had a pair of goals for the Owls, and freshman Sia Karamourtopoulos (Essex Junction, Vt.) added a goal and an assist. Sophomore Nora Mahoney (Belchertown, Mass.) and senior Michelle Boland (Worcester, Mass.) each were credited with two assists.

Southern Maine grabbed a 1-0 lead just 68 seconds into the match when freshman Bridget FitzGerald (Concord, N.H.) controlled a loose ball in the penalty area and directed a shot at goal that deflected in off a Keene State defender.

The Huskies' lead stood until the 22nd minute when Bradford received a pass from Mahoney and put a shot past USM junior goalkeeper Alison Bradley (Auckland, New Zealand). Bradford netted what proved to be the game winner in the 24th minute converting from Karamourtopoulos. Karamourtopoulos made it 3-1 in the 32nd minute off an assist from Mahoney.

Brunelle and Boland combined in the 49th minute and again in the 65th minute. Boland's cross from the right wing was perfectly placed and Brunelle headed it home for the first marker. The second goal came on a header off a corner kick.

Freshman goalkeeper Megan Dempsey (East Weymouth, Mass.) and sophomore Ashley Molloy (Manchester, N.H.) split the time in net for Keene State. Dempsey made one save in the first 72 minutes while Molloy did not register a stop over the final 18 minutes.

Bradley was credited with 10 saves in 78 minutes before being relieved by freshman Kat Rothe (Leeds, Maine) who made one stop. Keene State out shot USM 24-4 for the match.

Southern Maine will host Bowdoin College in its next match on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.). Keene State will host Clark University under the lights on Wednesday (6:30 p.m.).
