Box Score KEENE, N.H. 10/3/09 - Five different players
found the back of the net in Keene State's 5-0 shutout victory over
Rhode Island College in Little East Conference women's soccer
action at Owl Athletic Complex on Saturday.
Winners of seven of their last eight games, Keene State improves
to 9-2 (3-0 LEC) while Rhode Island College falls to 1-7 (0-3
LEC). The Owls are tied for the top spot in the LEC with
UMass-Boston, which plays at Eastern Conn. later today.
Senior Kendra Spencer (Petoskey, Mich.) and
sophomore Leah Teter (Granville, Mass.) scored
first half goals for the Owls. Junior Katie Bradford
(Lebanon, N.H.), freshman Mary Lake (Portsmouth,
R.I.), and sophomore Brittany Watkinson
(Rochester, N.H.) were second half scorers for KSC, which
blasted the RIC net with 43 shots.
Keene State didn't waste any time getting on the board. Spencer
put the Owls ahead 1-0 at the 2:37 mark when her shot for 20-yards
out went over the outstretched hand of RIC junior goalie
Maddie Pirri (Bristol, R.I.) and into the net for
her second goal of the season.
Bradford had a chance to extend the Owls lead later in the half,
but her drive was deflected over the net by Pirri, who finished the
game with 20 saves.
Teter gave KSC a 2-0 lead right before the end of the half when
she got control of a loose ball on the right side and fired a shot
into the top corner at 41:53.
Freshman Libby Lazer (Wakefield, R.I.) had an
opportunity to get the Anchorwomen on the board when she went down
the right side, but her bid was denied by Owl sophomore goalie
Megan Dempsey (East Weymouth, Mass.).
A busy Pirrini kept it a two goal game when she came across and
made a diving save off the foot of Owl senior Molly
Brunelle (Walpole, N.H.) at the 37:40 mark.
Bradford converted a crossing ball from junior Nora
Mahoney (Belchertown, Mass.) to give KSC a 3-0 lead. It
was Bradford's team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Lake made it 5-0 with her first college goal at the 72:56 mark.
The first-year back lofted a shot just inside the box that landed
into the net. Five minutes later, Watkinson completed the scoring
for the Owls with an unassisted goal.
Dempsey made one save for KSC before giving way to senior
Samantha Hirsh (Holliston, Mass.), whom played the
final 4:34 of the game.
Keene State is at Westfield State on Wednesday. Rhode Island
College has the week off before hosting Plymouth State next
Saturday.
