Keene State comes up short at Westfield 2-1

WESTFIELD, Mass. 10/7/09 - The Keene State women's soccer team saw its five game winning streak come to an end with a 2-1 non-conference loss to Westfield State College on Wednesday night.

Junior Jill Ranney (Southwick) and senior Alicia Chandler (Duxbury) scored early goals  for Westfield State to hold off KSC.  Sophomore Bridget Hennessey (Essex Junction, Vt.) scored late in the game for the KSC Owls.

Westfield, ranked 10th in New England Division III, boosted its record to 10-1-1 with its eighth straight victory. Westfield also extended its non-losing streak to 11 straight games. Keene State, ranked eighth in New England, is 9-3.

Following a 15-minute power outage at the start of the game, Ranney ripped a shot inside the right post in the fourth minute for a 1-0 lead. Meg Gearin assisted the goal with a nice crossing pass. Westfield took a 2-0 lead in the 16th minute on a spectacular goal by Chandler, whose direct kick from 40 yards just went under the crossbar.

Keene scored its goal on a direct kick in the 87th minute. With a strong wind to her back, Hennessey rifled a shot high into the net.

Westfield out-shot Keene, 16-12, including a 10-4 edge in the first half. Keene keeper Megan Dempsey (Weymouth) made seven saves, including a nice stop on a Gearin shot midway through the second half.

Westfield goalie Jess Pieciak (Three Rivers) recorded six saves, including a breakaway from the left side late in the second half.

Keene State returns to Little East play on Saturday when it travels to UMass-Dartmouth.
