CHANDLER, FLA. 3/18/09 - Roger Williams University cooled off Keene State College, sweeping the Owls in a pair of seven inning baseball games 10-7 and 7-5 at Snedigar Field in Chandler, Arizona on Thursday.

            The Owls (5-4) fell behind early in both games and never recovered.  "Both starters struggled early and we didn't get many timely hits," said KSC Coach Ken Howe, whose team left a total of 18 runners on base in the two games. "But give them credit, we hit some hard balls and they made some nice defensive plays."

            The Hawks scored six runs in the first off of Owl starter Jeff Pelkey (Fitzwilliam, N.H.), who lasted just 2/3 of an inning.

            The Owls came back to score single runs in the second, third and fourth innings, and added three more runs in the fifth on a RBI single by Jon Barber (Brattleboro, Vt.) and a two-run double by Jeff Perkins (Dunbarton, N.H.) to make it a 7-6 games.  The Hawks answered with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to take the opener.

            Dan Martin (Cromwell, Conn.) pitched well in middle relief, giving up one run on three hits with three Ks and a walk.

            Perkins went 4-for 5 at the plate while Jamie Chevalier (Amherst, N.H.) had two hits and three RBIs. Anthony Cipolla (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Barber, who was returning to the line-up after an ankle injury, also had two hits each.

            In the second game, Roger Williams scored six runs in the second inning to chase the Owls' Ryan Boden (Keene, N.H.) from the mound.

            KSC played catch one once again, scoring one run in the third on a RBI double by Bobby Doyon (Keene, N.H.) and two more in the sixth on a RBI triple by Tyler DiPrato (Suffield, Conn.).  DiPrato came home on a fielder's choice to make it 6-3.

            Kyle O'Brien (Springfield, N.H.) had a good outing in relief, allowing a couple of hits over 3 1/3 innings while fanning five batters.

            After RWU scored a run sixth, KSC rallied with two runs in the seventh on RBI hits from DiPrato and Erik Bergstrom (Enfield, Conn.).  The Owls had seven hits in the game with DiPrato and Bergstrom getting two each.

            The Owls play two seven inning games against Pomona-Pitzer on Friday. The Sagehens bring a 16-2 record into the twinbill.
