KEENE, N.H. 4/10/09 - Playing its first home game of the
season, Keene State banged out 15 hits and got a solid start from
sophomore Corey Vogt (Suffield, Conn.), who tossed
six innings of two-hit ball, in a 17-0 shutout victory over rival
Plymouth State University at Owl Athletic Complex on Friday
afternoon.
Keene State (13-8, 3-2 LEC) extends its winning streak to five
games while Plymouth State falls to 7-13 and 1-4 in
conference play.
The Owls used the long ball to build up an early lead in the
game. Sophomore Bobby Doyon (Keene, N.H.)
had a three run home run, his fifth of the season, in the first
inning.
Senior Beau Darak (Londonderry, N.H.) added a
two-run shot, his first of the season, in a five-run second
inning. Doyon, who also had a two-run single in the inning,
finished the game with three hits and six RBIs.
"It's all about focusing on the fundamentals at every at bat,
said Doyon, who has 35 RBIs on the season.
KSC went up 11-0 in the fourth with junior Keith
Patnode (Keene, N.H.) and freshman Cody
Callahan (Seekonk, N.H.) driving in runs with RBI singles.
Freshman Kyle Morrill (Auburn, N.H.), Patnode,
and Callahan finished the game with two hits each.
Seniors Marc McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.) and Josh Roberti
(Cranston, R.I.), sophomore Grant Livingston (Niantic, Conn.), and
freshman Mike Cappiello (Westfield, N.J.) picked up hits for the
Panthers.
Vogt fanned five and issued one walk to improve his record to
3-0.
"It good to go out there with some run support," said
Vogt. "It allows you to lay back and just worry about
throwing strikes and getting outs."
Sophomore Bryant Lausberg (Somersworth, N.H.) took the loss for
PSU. He gave up eight runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and
four walks in his three innings on the mound. He is 1-2 on the
season.
Both team play LEC doubleheaders on Saturday, the Owls travel to
Southern Maine and the Panthers go to UMass-Boston.
