KEENE, N.H. 4/19/09 - The Keene State College baseball team
found itself on both ends of one-sided games in a two-team
doubleheader at Owl Athletic Complex on Sunday. KSC
dispatched LEC opponent UMass-Boston 12-5 in the first game, before
dropping the second game 19-4 to nationally ranked and regional
rival Wheaton College in the nightcap.
With the split, Keene State goes to 16-13 and 5-6 in the LEC.
The Owls had to come back to win the opener. The Beacons
took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Sophomore Dan
Noonan (Westport, Mass.) led off the inning with a double and came
home on an infield single by sophomore Connor Reinfort (Manchester,
N.H.). Junior Arthur Lauzier (Fall River, Mass.), who had singled,
came home a fielder's choice play. Junior Drew Tambling
(Sterling, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch.
KSC got one run back in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single
by freshman Kyle Morrill (Auburn, N.H.) The Owl
took a 4-3 in the in the bottom of the third on a two-run home run
by sophomore Jon Barber (Brattleboro, Vt.).
KSC added three more runs in the fourth, one on a fielder's
choice, and another on sacrifice fly, and the third on a passed
ball.
Freshman Erik Bergstrom (Enfield, Conn.) had an
RBI double as the Owls plated two more runs in the fifth to go up
9-3. KSC added a single run in the seventh and two more in
the eight to make it 12-3. Freshman Cody
Callahan (Seekonk, Mass.) and Bergstrom had run-producing
hits in the eighth.
Senior Eric Salvador (Middleboro, Mass.) had a two-run home run
for the Beacons in the ninth.
Callahan, Bergstrom, and Morrill each had three hits for the
Owls while junior Anthony Cipolla (Glastonbury,
Conn.) knocked in three runs.
Sophomore Ryan Walsh (Newton, Mass.), sophomore Tim Fontaine
(Worcester, Mass.), Tambling, and Lauzier finished the game with
two hits each for UMB.
Freshman Jeff Pelkey (Fitzwilliam, N.H.)
pitched seven strong innings to pick up the win (3-1). He gave up
three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
Sophomore Mark Grant (Danbury, Conn.) took the loss (2-2) for
UMB. He allowed seven runs on seven hits with two strikeouts
and three walks.
Wheaton (26-7) led 17-1 after four innings on the way to
coasting to the non-conference victory over the Owls. The
Lyons scored nine runs on eight hits in the second inning.
Key hits included a three-run double by Sean Munley (Trenton, N.J.)
and a two-run double off the bat of Hadi Raad (Hasting-on-Hudson,
N.Y.)
The only bright spot for KSC was a two-run home run by freshman
Steve Case (New Boston, N.H.) in the sixth inning,
his first collegiate round-tripper. Case has two hits in the game.
Munley had three hits and five RBIs to lead the Lyons' 23-hit
attack. Dan Haugh (Andover, Mass.) added three hits and three
RBIs. Tad Skelley (Wolfeboro, N.H.), Dan Demeo (Glastonbury,
Conn.), and Raad each had three hits.
The first of seven pitchers to see action on the hill, freshman
Corey Gilmore (Northfield, N.H.) (2-1) took the
loss for KSC.
Lyon starter Nick Kostaras (North Attleboro, Mass.) improves his
record to 3-1 with the win. He tossed the first six innings,
allowing three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and two
walks.
Keene State hosts Western New England on Wednesday.
Wheaton hosts Springfield in an opening round NEWMAC tournament
game on Wednesday.
